Greater Bay Airlines (GBA) announced on 128 flight cancellations on Jan. 22, 2025, due to aircraft shortages. This affects up to 5,500 passengers. While the airline is actively resolving the issue, the Hong Kong Transport and Logistics Bureau (HKTLB) also shows strong attention to the incident.

Mass Cancellation of Flights for February and March

GBA announced the cancellation of 128 flights, which includes 64 pairs of flights. These routes connect Hong Kong with major Asian tourist destinations such as cities in Japan, South Korea and Thailand. The cancellations affect around 5,500 passengers.

GBA explains that the flight cancellation is due to plane shortages and route regrouping. A delay in receipt of new aircraft, and regular inspections have led to a further decrease in aircraft available, thus flight cancellations.

The airlines explained that cancelled flights would not affect the Lunar New Year travel period.

GBA and HKTLB: Follow up on the Situation

GBA has apologised for the mass cancellation of flights. The CEO of GBA admits a lapse in scheduling and promises to provide better customer service. The customer support at GBA is receiving high volumes of inquiries and promises to get in touch with affected customers soon.

The HKLTB shows strong concern for the incident. GBA is required to submit an investigation report to the bureau explaining the issue.

Regional travel is a popular holiday choice in Hong Kong with high volumes of traffic. The mass cancellation of flights operated by GBA disrupts many travellers’ plans. Affected travellers would need to rebook flights or revise travel plans.
