In early March 2026, Wizz Air obtained a permit enabling transatlantic flights between the United Kingdom and the United States. The airline is planning to launch their FIFA World Cup expansion plans this summer, flying the fans and teams competing between the two destinations.

When did Wizz Air’s UK-US flight plan take place?
Wizz Air reported that it had applied for the permit in late January 2026 and received permission on March 6, 2026. The airline has prepared heavily for this new operation, hoping to deliver the best possible experience for its potential guests.
While the airline views the decision to grow its operations as significant step in their aviation presence, this UK and U.S. transatlantic expansion will not include plans to launch regular commercial flights to the US.
Wizz Air aim’s to create flights for groups travelling to the FIFA World Cup, from the football teams flying out to the U.S. to the fans wanting to fly to the East Coast. The service will also target larger group of corporations, sports communities, the touring market and those travelling privately who are in search of convenience.

Excitement over new process
Yvonne Moynihan, the managing director of Wizz Air UK has expressed excitement about the new process, stating:
“Receiving approval to operate between the UK and United States is a huge milestone for our company. We are ready to deliver exceptional charter experiences and bring fans closer to the action in the United States.”
Since 2023, several adjustments to their aviation capacity have impacted Wizz Air’s ability to make the transatlantic connection with North America.
In November 2025, an A321XLR Wizz Air aircraft took Viktor Orban, the Hungarian Prime Minister, from Budapest to Washington DC. The airline, therefore, is growing its operations to appeal to a wider market.
