Air Europa has announced that in June 2026, they will introduce a weekly service schedule flying to South Africa. This new service will be from Madrid Barajas to Johannesburg O.R Tambo, operated with Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft.

Air Europa

This airline is the third-largest Spanish airline and is based in Llucmajor, Mallorca. Founded in 1986, the airline later expanded into scheduled flights and became part of the SkyTeam Alliance (a global airline alliance) in 2007.

Air Europa emphasises sustainability and innovation as they enhance retail with New Distribution Capability (NDC) platforms. They also improve fleet efficiency with modern aircraft and leverage data for personalised services. These features help to create a seamless, eco-friendly and technologically advanced experience.

The airline primarily operates out of Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD) and acts as a full-service carrier, enabling connections from Europe to over 44 destinations and has a strong focus on Latin America, the Caribbean and North America.

Route Developments

Prior to this development, Air Europa’s African network was limited to seasonal, summer-only services to North Africa (Morocco and Tunisia). However, this new service from Madrid to Johannesburg will be operated 3 times per week (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) and launches this schedule on Jun. 24, 2026. This enables the airline to expand beyond its current North African routes.

This new service to South Africa will help to boost market share by linking high-demand safari and cultural tourism with European, Caribbean and South American routes. This will also strengthen their SkyTeam partnership (they are a major global airline alliance) as passengers will benefit from aligned schedules and reciprocal loyalty rewards.
