Over 50 flights cancelled

The strike by the civil aviation workers started early this morning, and was said to be due to the increasing social tensions in the transportation sector, raising concerns over their wages, working conditions and wider labour issues within the aviation sector. Over 50 flights from airlines such as British Airways, Ryanair, easyJet, Lufthansa, Iberia, and Air France were hit with cancellations and delays.

Currently the strike is only affecting the Toulouse-Blagnac airport and no other airports in France have reported any strike-related disruptions at this moment in time. The airport officials have not stated how long the strikes are expected to last therefore further disruptions could be likely. This is not the first time this year that airport workers across the globe have gone on strike.

Advice for Passengers

The French Civil Aviation Authority (DGAC) has indicated that only flights scheduled for May 6 has been impacted, however delays and further cancellations may be expected and may have an knock-on effect on any flights scheduled for May 7. Airlines may need extra time to reposition aircrafts and assign crews, and due to the worker walkout wait times for check-in, security, and boarding for passengers may take longer.

Passengers are advised to check the live departure and arrivals information as well as keep in direct contact with their airline.

Possibility of compensation will be in accordance to the airline policies, those who have had flights cancelled may potentially be eligible however passengers who’s flights were delayed may not be so lucky. As under the EU regulations, delays that result from strikes by non-airline employees (such as airport workers or air traffic controllers) are classified as “extraordinary circumstances” meaning airlines do not have to compensate their passengers for delays that are caused by these events.
