Following today’s National Security Committee meeting in Islamabad, all Indian airlines have been banned from entering Pakistan’s airspace. This development comes as all trade between Pakistan and India’s capital, New Delhi, has been suspended following a breakdown in diplomatic relations.

The Nature of Pakistan’s Ban on India’s Airlines

The ban came into place after a crisis which occurred in the Kashmir region between India and Pakistan. 26 tourists were unfortunately killed in an attack which has been dubbed the worst attack since 2008’s shootings in Mumbai.

This has caused a rift in relations between Pakistan and India, leading to the suspension of a treaty concerning the Indus Waters. The police forces of India confirmed three suspects were involved in the Kashmir tourist attacks, two of which were of Pakistani Origin.

The Upshot of the Rift in Relations

India’s police forces were unable to present proof confirming two of the attackers were Pakistani. This has lead to Pakistan closing its airspace to all airlines of India, including the main flight carrier Air India.

The authorities of Pakistan also declared that the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme will be suspended as a result of its strained relationship with India. Those residing in Pakistan from India are therefore required to return within 48 hours, with Sikh pilgrims being exempt from this rule.
