Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has expanded its domestic routes to Halmstad and Kalmar. The routes from Arlanda to Halmstad and Kalmar are part of SAS’ investment in the Swedish domestic network. The new services will improve accessibility in Sweden from north to south.

Halmstad

The Halmstad region is recognised as the key axis of business development. Located in southwest Sweden, the city’s alluring coastline and spirited cultural scene is popular among tourists.

Edward Fotheringham, Vice President of Global Sales at SAS, said:

We are very pleased to begin operations to Halmstad and Kalmar, as this is a natural step in SAS’ long-term commitment to enhancing travel options within Sweden and internationally. Strong connections for both leisure and business travellers are a win for the entire country, playing a crucial role in boosting the Swedish economy across multiple sectors.

Arlanda will serve as the central hub for Swedish domestic traffic going forward. It also offers access to an external network, like Copenhagen.

Anders Thornberg, Governor of Halland County, commented on the economic benefits of the route development:

The air link between Halmstad and Stockholm is a vital part of Sweden’s infrastructure. Not only does it facilitate business, government presence, and regional development, but it also plays a crucial role in our defence and societal preparedness.

Kalmar

In southeast Sweden resides the historically-rich city of Kalmar, which serves as a gateway to the Öland island. Kalmar has a thriving entrepreneurial spirit and rich business community, says SAS. Known for its natural beauty and historic landmarks, the city doesn’t fail in attracting tourists, near or far.

Ronny Lindberg, CEO at Kalmar Öland Airport said:

It’s highly positive that SAS is now operating the route to Kalmar with Arlanda as the hub. Moving forward, it is essential that we all capitalise on the increased accessibility provided by SAS’ investment, which is fundamental to the region’s growth.

Further expansions

SAS’s domestic network has expanded to numerous destinations this year. These two recent additions join locations such as Sälen, along with an increased frequency of flights to established routes.

SAS said a key factor in this expansion is Braathens Airways (BRA), who signed a subcontractor agreement with SAS in September, 2024. BRA have flown on behalf of SAS since Jan. 1, 2025, via the Arlanda hub, and are also recruiting more pilots and cabin crew.

Scandinavian Airlines looks forward to welcoming onboard new and old passengers.
