Late last year British Airways announced the suspension of its direct flights between London Heathrow and Abu Dhabi. The suspension is set to last the duration of the entire summer 2025 season. The suspension of flights to the popular holiday destination will affect travel from March 31 to October 25. This decision comes as the airline struggles with ongoing supply chain issues related to its Boeing 787 Dreamliner fleet.

Reasons Behind the Suspension

The main cause of this disruption lies in delays from engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce. Boeing 787 Dreamliners, which operate long-haul routes including Abu Dhabi, are powered by Rolls Royce Trent 1000 engines. Significant supply chain delays have set back the delivery of critical components, leaving British Airways with no other option than to operate with a reduced fleet.

The suspension of direct flights to Abu Dhabi is the latest in a series of cancellations by the British flag carrier. However, given the popularity of Abu Dhabi as a holiday destination among British travellers, it is very likely the most surprising among the cancellations. The airline has already been forced to ground several other routes, including Gatwick to New York and Heathrow to Kuala Lumpur, due to the same shortage in engine parts.

Further Implications

The suspension of British Airways’ Abu Dhabi route is expected to have significant economic repercussions. The reduced capacity is likely to see a surge in airfare prices. Fewer direct flights between Heathrow and Abu Dhabi means decreased competition. This factor alone might see passengers hit with an increase in ticket costs. However, London Heathrow won’t be the only hub impacted by the suspension. The cancellations will likely see Abu Dhabi’s tourism sector take a hit too. The route suspension threatens to disrupt the growing influx of British holidaymakers in the UAE capital.
