Caribbean Airline Arajet has ordered 20 new Boeing aircraft for its fleet. The new carrier plans to launch later in 2022.

20 new 73 MAX for the Caribbean carrier

Arajet has branded itself as the Caribbean’s first ultra-low-cost carrier, aiming to make air travel more accessible for people travelling to and from the islands. Its latest acquisition of 20 new Boeing 737-8-200s will help them to achieve this goal, with the CEO of Arajet, Victor Pacheco Mendez, commenting:

“The efficient Boeing 737 MAX, together with financial and operational support from our partners at Griffin and Bain Capital, gives us the solid foundation necessary to provide flights at affordable prices to travelers in the region,”

Arajet also has the option to purchase 15 more 737s, in addition to the 25 leased and owned aircraft currently in its fleet.

Who is Arajet?

Arajet is a new airline based in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, and will begin its operations this spring. They believe that the Caribbean is currently underserved by low-cost airlines and are hoping that their services will help grow the nation’s tourism industry. The Dominican Government has welcomed the new venture, with President Luis Rodolfo Abinader Cornona commenting:

“Arajet will have the full support of the Dominican government, as they seek to grow tourism into the country and enable Dominicans living abroad to visit their home with low-priced air fares,”

It will begin its services in May with flights from Las Americas International Airport of Santo Domingo to Central America and the other Caribbean islands. Later in the year, the airline expects to add flights to US locations with significant familial ties to the Dominican Republic, such as New York, Boston, Miami, and Chicago.

Earlier this month, the airline received its first Boeing 737-8 as a lease from Griffin Global Asset Management. The plane was christened ‘Pico Duarte’ after the Caribbean’s highest mountain, and the Dominican President attended the inaugural event.
