Naples Capodichino International Airport (NAP) will be temporarily closed through November for major works. Renovation work will take place on the airport’s runway and taxiways, along with construction of a second terminal. The airport will be completely closed to travellers while this work is underway to minimise disruption by allowing the work to be completed 24/7.

Major Renovations for Naples Airport

Naples Airport will be temporarily closed until Nov. 30 to allow major renovation work to be completed. The works will cost around 30 million euros. The airport’s renovations are being carried out in the coming weeks to avoid peak season, when work would be much more disruptive.

On the airport’s website, a statement says:

“Naples Airport will be closed in November 2026 for radical and scheduled runway renovation work, in compliance with rigorous industry regulations and in line with GESAC’s priority commitment to ensuring the highest safety standards.”

The project will completely refurbish the airport’s runway and include extensive work on its connecting taxiways, which should improve the safety and reliability of the airport’s infrastructure.

The project also includes a second terminal built for non-Schengen flights. NAP is one of Italy’s busiest airports, with 13 million passengers passing through annually, and this figure is expected to rise to 17.3 million by 2035. The new terminal for flights outside the Schengen area is expected to help the airport manage this increased traffic.

In addition, the major project will include new road links and underground connections, along with a hotel and new aircraft stands.

Modernisation efforts will also replace the airport’s visual aids lighting (AVL) systems, an essential safety feature of modern airports that ensures aircraft and ground staff have good visibility when a plane is about to touch down.

Passengers Diverted to Cos d’Amalfi and Cilento Airport

Whilst renovations are underway at Naples Airport, passengers will largely be diverted to Cos d’Amalfi and Cilento Airport (QSR) in Salerno. QSR is around 56km from NAP; however, GESAC has confirmed that a bus service will run between Naples Piazza Garibaldi and QSR to help passengers reach the airport.

GESAC manages both Salerno and Naples airports. They will run eight shuttle bus services in each direction per day, for 12 euros per person. The services will run throughout the airport’s closure.

Train services between Naples and Salerno will also increase in frequency during the closure to help manage the disruption.
