SpiceJet’s CCO, Shilpa Bhatia says the expansion is part of the airline’s recovery as the industry starts to rebound from Covid:

“We are delighted to introduce new flights on domestic and international routes. With the economy reviving from the pandemic slump, this will help us to enhance our presence in the aviation industry domestically as well as globally”

He adds that the new routes will aid local economies, especially in destinations popular for leisure or religious travel:

“The flights announced today includes a mix of industry first, new routes and enhanced frequencies covering both domestic and international destinations. Along with enhancing convenience for general travellers, tourism and local economy on these routes will get much needed boost as many of them are important religious and leisure travel destinations”

The new routes

SpiceJet has announced a number of new international routes, mainly focused on the Middle East. From Mumbai airport, passengers will now be able to travel to Bangladesh’s capital city Dhaka, and the cities of Riyadh and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia. The airline is also offering flights to the two Saudi cities from Kozhikode International Airport. Additionally, the airline will now be offering direct flights from Ahmedabad to Muscat, Oman.

The airline will also be strengthening its domestic network, offering flights from Mumbai to Tirupati and Guwahati, and from Ahmedabad to Goa, Bagdogra and Shirdi. SpiceJet is starting an industry-first route from Delhi to Porbandar in Gujarat, a popular tourist destination.

SpiceJet will also be upping the frequency on several of its more popular domestic routes. This summer, routes from  Ahmedabad to Dehradun, Hyderabad to Shirdi, Delhi to Jabalpur and Leh, and Mumbai to Goa and Srinagar, will all be getting more flights.

The new routes will be operated by the airline’s fleet of Boeing 737 and Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. Though the airline may be short a few 737 pilots following a flight training issue earlier this month.
