Delta Unveils Plant-Based Menu Options

By Fraser Watt 3 Min Read

Delta Airlines has announced it is introducing a new plant-based in-flight menu in collaboration with meat substitute giants Impossible Foods and Black Sheep Foods.

The US-based carrier said the decision forms part of its wider goal to promote wellness for travellers onboard.

The partnerships with the plant-based food firms open the door to offering new dishes, such as plant-based lamb meatballs, while also reintroducing regular hot meals for all passengers.

“Delicious…and better for the environment”

Kristen Manion Taylor, head of In-Flight Service at the airline, told reporters: “Not only are plant-based meats like the Impossible Burger delicious to eat, but they’re also often better for the environment, using far less land and water to produce.”

Delta confirmed that for the time being, the new options would be available only on certain flights over 900 miles and for business and first-class passengers. It is therefore expected that most of the airline’s international routes will now include the plant-based menu option.

In addition to plant-based lamb meatballs and the Impossible Burger, the airline’s new veggie menu also features cauliflower cakes and a warm seasonal vegetable plate.

“Helping customers feel their best”

The broader goal to boost wellness comes alongside new in-flight entertainment options, including meditation and stretching classes offered by Peleton, and a new partnership with Kater’s Real Food to provide organic and nutritious snacks for all cabins.

Dr. Henry Ting, Delta’s Chief Health Officer, had this to say about the company’s new approach:

“We’ve taken a careful approach to ensure each customer feels taken care of during their journey on Delta because connecting the world also means caring for those in it and helping them feel their best no matter where they are.”

Business and first-class passengers on Delta are also told to expect more drink and dessert options on international flights from Tuesday 15 March.
