Delta announces huge Boeing 737 order at Farnborough Airshow

By Jasmine Adjallah 4 Min Read

Major U.S carrier Delta Air Lines dropped an exciting bombshell at the 2022 Farnborough International Airshow after announcing that it has placed an order for 100 of Boeing’s 737 Max 10 aircraft.

100 deliveries from 2025

Before the Farnborough International Airshow got underway this year, there were plenty of rumours and speculation surrounding the possibility of Delta Air Lines placing an order for the MAX. It didn’t take long for the Atlanta-based carrier to confirm that there was, in fact, truth behind the rumours.

Delta has placed an order for 100 stretched-fuselage 737 Max 10s, with options for 30 more. Deliveries will begin in 2025 and conclude by 2029.

Until today, Delta was actually the only one out of the United States’ big three carriers that had not begun flying (or had even ordered) any aircraft from the Boeing 737 MAX series.

But in light of concerns aired by Boeing that the Max 10 was in danger of being discontinued earlier this month becoming less prominent, it is reasonable to assume that Delta was smart in biding their time and has actually made the decision to place an order at the best time.

Smiles all round

Both Boeing and Delta came away pleased that such a deal has taken place. Boeing is no doubt pleased to accept such a large order for its MAX 10 and happy that Delta chose the model to form the backbone of its narrowbody fleet for the many years to come.

Boeing’s Commerical President Stan Deal commented on the order placed by Delta:

“We are proud that Delta Air Lines is renewing its single-aisle fleet with the 737 MAX, the industry’s most fuel-efficient family of airplanes. Built in our factory in Washington State with support from key suppliers across the US, the 737-10 will provide Delta Air Lines with the best economics to carry more passengers across its short and medium-haul routes.”

Delta is especially looking forward to benefiting from the MAX 10’s impressive sustainability credentials. As airlines look towards a more sustainable and climate-friendly future, sustainability qualities have never been more important and desired. Delta’s CEO is Ed Bastian. He commented on the important addition the 737 MAX 10 is to the carrier’s fleet:

“The Boeing 737 MAX 10 will be an important addition to Delta’s fleet as we shape a more sustainable future for air travel, with an elevated customer experience, improved fuel efficiency and best-in-class performance. These new aircraft provide superior operating economics and network flexibility, and the agreement reflects our prudent approach to deploying our capital.”
