World’s Top 5 Busiest Airports for 2022

The end of the Covid-19 pandemic has bought millions of passengers back to airports worldwide.

Many of us will know the struggles of rushing around an airport to find the right terminal with our suitcases, all while not trying to bump into anyone in the process. Let’s take a look at the top five world’s busiest airports.

Note that the results were calculated using total passenger traffic from Airports Council International which gave a preliminary statistic for 2022.

5. Dubai International Airport

Dubai International Airport is the primary international airport serving Dubai and millions of passengers annually. In 2022, it welcomed over 66 million (66,069,981) passengers, which makes it the fifth busiest airport in the world.

The airport opened in 1960. Since then, the airport has grown significantly. The airport has three terminals, including plenty of duty free shops, restaurants and airport lounges for passengers.

4. O’Hare International Airport, Chicago

O’hare International Airport is the leading international airport serving Chicago, Illinois. The airport welcomed over 68 million (68,340,619) passengers in 2022.

Initially, built-in 1942 as a plane factory during World War II, the airport has nine runways.

O’Hare has non-stop flights to 214 destinations in North America, South America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Australia.

3. Denver International Airport

Denver International Airport serves primarily Denver, Colorado. The airport welcomed over 69 million (69,286,461) passengers in 2022.

The airport is also the largest airport in the Western Hemisphere by land area at 33,531 acres.

2. Dallas Fort Worth International Airport

Second on our list of the world’s busiest airports is Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, which serves the city of Texas. The airport welcomed more than 73 million (73,362,946) passengers in 2022.

It is one of the largest airports in the world. It covers over 27 miles which is bigger than Manhattan!

1.  Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport

No Surprise! Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport was the busiest airport in 2022.

The airport serves Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States. The airport welcomed over 93 million (93,699,630) passengers in 2022!

Moreover, the airport has the tallest air traffic control tower in North America and the fourth tallest in the world, standing at 121 metres.

Also included in the list of the world’s busiest airports was Heathrow Airport at number eight, which welcomed 61 million passengers and Istanbul airport at number seven which served over 64 million passengers.
