Wizz Air is set to acquire an additional 75 A321 neo aircraft to their fleet by 2030, and acquire a majority of them by 2028. The airline is on track to becoming the first sustainable low-cost budget airline to have a 500 airbus fleet.

According to the statement, the acquisition of the 75 new A321neo aircraft is another step toward Wizz Air’s goal of tripling the size of its fleet to 500 aircraft by the end of the decade, as previously announced.

“The new A321neo aircraft will also offer significant environmental benefits thanks to its modern aviation technology solutions, with noise emissions reduced by around 50%, fuel consumption reduced by 20%, and nitrogen oxide emissions reduced by 50%. We remain on track to become a 500 aircraft airline group by the end of the decade while delivering our commitment to reduce our already industry-leading CO2 emissions by 25% by 2030”- József Váradi, CEO of Wizz Air

The 75 additional A321neo aircraft, most of which are expected to be delivered in 2028-29, undermine Wizz Air’s ambitious goal of more than tripling the size of its fleet by the end of the decade to become an airline of 500 aircraft.

How are other low-cost airlines approaching sustainability

Strengthening its position as one of the most sustainable low-cost airlines, the A321neo aircraft incorporates the latest technologies in aviation and offers significant environmental benefits, as mentioned by Wizz Air CEO József Váradi.

Many low-cost airlines, with the likes of RyanAir, are also trying to take a more sustainable approach as being a sustainable airline also attracts customers. Ryan Air recently signed a deal to purchase 160,000 tonnes of sustainable aviation fuel, which will be supplied to the European airline over the next eight years by OMV. Over the next 8 years, RyanAir hopes to save over 400,000 tonnes of carbon emissions using the generous fuel donation from OMV.

The Hungarian-owned air carrier Wizz Air currently has a fleet of 165 ultra-modern and efficient Airbus aircraft. Wizz Air operates one of the world’s youngest short-haul fleets offering customers an unrivalled travel experience while minimising carbon emissions.
