Qantas Airlines has announced it is reintroducing vegetarian meals and snacks on all its domestic flights. This is coming after a tweet of an angry passenger sparked international attention. The passenger Jon Dee had taken to Twitter to vent his anger for not being served a vegetarian option.
I’m on the Adelaide to Sydney flight – I’m informed that #Qantas no longer serve vegetarian food on domestic flights (except Perth).

In a series of tweets, Dee, who frequently travelled for work and had flown the airlines for years, accused Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce of deliberately trying to run the airline into the ground.
“On Qantas, you could get a proper meal, like pasta. They did great vegetarian meals. If it were a pie, you would get a vegetarian pie. You had a good choice.” he said.
The “No Vegetarian Option” Has Been On Since COVID

The airline introduced the no vegetarian option in 2020 at the pandemic’s start. A Qantas spokesperson confirmed to reporters that the airline only started offering one meal option to passengers on several domestic flights due to changes made to “simplify the service delivery for our crew” during COVID.
The airline offers a single meal/snack option on shorter flights, such as a chicken pie, a zucchini, and onion frittata. For longer domestic and international flights, passengers can pre-book special meals that include vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free options.
The Airline Responded With A Revert
Following the tweets from Jon Dee and the backlashes that followed from all angles, Qantas has now reverted this practice by announcing the reintroduction of vegetarian meals and snacks on all its domestic flights.
Qantas Executive Manager of Product and Service Phil Capps said:
“We’ve heard the message loud and clear about having vegetarian offerings on all of our flights, and so we’re making that change a priority,”
The airline also announced it is in the middle of a broader menu update for the domestic network, which is scheduled to be due in October 2022.
@Qantas just called me.
They said they listened to me and that vegetarian food is coming back on #Qantas domestic flights.
Thanks for doing the right thing Qantas 👍 https://t.co/QLgptvOTls
