The United Arab Emirates (UAE) government has signed a strategic partnership with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) to share and collaborate on knowledge, practices and expertise in aviation and cyber security.

Details behind the partnership

The memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed during the 2022 World Government Summit (WGS 2022) in Dubai. The summit took place at the Expo 2020 Dubai after the event came to a close. The summit brought leading experts across various sectors, senior officials and policy-makers from across the globe to share and contribute to policies and models that’ll be crucial to the growing development of our world.

WGS 2022 hosted more than 4000 senior government officials from 29th to 30th March.

Mohammed Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and Chairman of the World Government Summit Organisation signed the agreement that birthed the new partnership along with President of the ICAO Council Salvatore Sciacchitano. The agreement was signed in the presence of several UAE government and ICAO officials.

The agreement is relatively collaborative. It focuses on developing online security, accelerating innovation in civil aviation, and supporting sharing of knowledge and expertise that will support the global aviation sector.

President of the ICAO Council Salvatore Sciacchitano emphasised the importance of facilitating productive partnerships between international governments and organisations to find solutions for challenges societies across the globe are facing.

Mohammed Al Gergawi spoke positively about the new partnership, citing the UAE’s high interest in promoting mutual work and positive impact between governments, believing in the importance of transferring the UAE’s knowledge and successful business models to the global stage:

The UAE government’s approach has become an international model for shaping the future and designing innovative solutions to tackle global challenges.

He also emphasised how the partnership with ICAO shall be a positive step towards empowering global human capital in the civil aviation sector. Civil aviation is one of the United Arab Emirates’ primary sectors (when you consider major airlines such as Emirates and Etihad).

Finally, Mohammed Al Gergawi spoke of how the partnership will help ensure the success of sustainable development goals. Advanced tech support the UAE can offer shall help several nations worldwide to improve their aviation sector’s online security and safety.
