Icelandic low-cost airline PLAY is offering travellers the chance to win two free roundtrip tickets to Iceland.

The prize includes a unique helicopter tour of the active Fagradalsfjall volcano which began erupting on 3 August.

The first in 8 months…

PLAY is one of Iceland’s low-cost carriers. Located in the country’s capital of Reykjavík, the airline has announced a unique competition by which two lucky winners can receive roundtrip tickets to Iceland and enjoy a helicopter tour of the Fagradalsfjall volcano – which is currently erupting at the time of writing.

Fagradalsfjall is a tuya volcano located on the Reykjanes Peninsula, around 40 kilometres from Reykjavík, Iceland.

On 3 August, the active volcano began erupting after eight months since the last eruption following thousands of local earthquakes.

Already, thousands of locals and tourists have hiked to the site to witness the new eruption. The hike is no easy feat too – it typically takes 4 hours.

The area is closely monitored by the authorities, and caution is strongly advised, but the volcano is relatively safe to visit mainly because of how small it is. It poses no risk to infrastructure or those who live nearby.

The closest airport – Keflavik International Airport – has remained open and those onboard incoming flights can undoubtedly expect a stunning view!

A unique prize

The lucky winner of PLAY’s giveaway will receive a voucher for two roundtrip airfares to Keflavik which can be used from any of PLAY’s destinations.

To enter, it couldn’t be easier! All you need to do is sign up to receive PLAY’s newsletter by 23 August. One lucky winner will be selected at random the following day.

Positive progress

PLAY is a relatively new airline. The carrier commenced operations on 24 June 2021. Since then, the carrier has grown its modern fleet to three Airbus A320neos and three Airbus A321neos. In fact, their 6th aircraft arrived this June.

PLAY is due to receive four new A320s and A321neos in total by next winter, allowing the carrier to reach a total of 10 aircraft in its fleet.

PLAY’s website advertises as offering affordable flights to “wonderful destinations in Europe and North America” and this April, it launched its inaugural flights to the United States with a connection from Keflavík International Airport to Baltimore/Washington International.

On 8 August, the new carrier announced some impressive gains from its first year. It carried 109,956 passengers in July, a 25% increase from the previous month. This July, the carrier’s load factor was at 87.9% compared to a 79.2% load factor in June.

The young airline attributed this positive growth due to the addition of the transatlantic hub and new connections in Europe and the United States.

Free tickets to see the stunning sight of an active volcano? A perfect quick marketing strategy. Will you be entering PLAY’s competition?
