Despite the difficulties faced by the pandemic, Hong Kong International Airport still has been rewarded as the “Best Airport 2022” in the “World Air Cargo Awards” organized by “Air Cargo Week”. The award is regarded as one of the most prestigious recognitions in the global air cargo industry. The winner is voted by industry groups from the air cargo supply chain industry, logistics service companies and suppliers.

The Airport Authority announced yesterday that the air traffic volume has increased by more than 2.5 times to 295,000 passengers compared to June 2021 after the ease of arrival restriction. However, the global supply chain was hit by the epidemic, and the geopolitical situation in Europe continued to be tense. Cargo traffic fell to 363,000 tonnes, while aircraft movements increased by 1% to 11,175 flights.

Airport passenger traffic rocketed 2.5 times last month

The Airport Authority also released the latest passenger traffic increased by more than 1.2 times while cargo traffic fell by 8.2% to 2.1 million tonnes.

Aircraft movements fell to more than 62,000 in total. The bureau pointed out that with the relaxed quarantine restriction, the number of passengers handled increased significantly in June, with the most significant increase in passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia.

However, the impact on the global supply chain has continued geopolitical tensions in Europe and led to a decline in overall cargo volumes. Export shipments fell by 10% year-on-year, with the most significant reductions in loads to and from the major trading regions of Europe and North America. Over the past 12 months, the airport’s passenger traffic rose by more than 99 % year-on-year to 1.81 million, while cargo traffic increased by 2.6 % to 4.8 million tonnes. The number of Takeoffs and landings has increased by 11.5 % to 144,000 sorties.
