British Airways Invest in Cardiff Maintenance Base

British Airways is investing millions of pounds to expand its engineering maintenance facility at Cardiff Airport. Additionally, the project will upgrade one of three maintenance bays at British Airways Maintenance Cardiff (BAMC) to accommodate larger A350 aircraft.

Next, once completed, BAMC will have two flexible bays, enabling more complex maintenance work for multiple aircraft types. This marks a significant step in the airline’s £7 billion transformation initiative.

In a statement to Travel Radar, Andy Best, Chief Technical Officer at British Airways, said the strategy importance of the growing:

“Our Cardiff base is critical to our operations. This investment ensures its role in maintaining Boeing and Airbus long-haul fleets for years to come.”

Enhancing Efficiency and Supporting Wales

However, currently focused on Boeing 777 and 787 aircraft, BAMC’s enhanced facility will boost efficiency and capacity. Construction will begin in 2025, with completion expected by 2026. The investment of millions of pounds secures the future of BAMC, which employs 480 people and contributes significantly to the Welsh economy.

Rebecca Evans, Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy, and Planning, said this in the announcement:

“This investment showcases Cardiff Airport’s importance and supports Wales’ Aerospace Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul sector.”

The expansion of British Airways’ Cardiff maintenance facility is a key part of the airline’s broader strategy to enhance its global operations. By adding the capacity to service Airbus A350 aircraft, BAMC will be able to handle a wider range of long-haul planes, further solidifying its role as a vital component of the airline’s engineering network.
