Exciting times lie ahead for the Midlands region.  As restrictions start to ease, along with the prospect of future air travel on the horizon, Birmingham Airport prepares to welcome back customers. And what better way to celebrate the return of travel than for the Airport to achieve an Airport Health Accreditation from the Airports Council International (ACI).

Airport Health Accreditation

The accreditation has been awarded to the airport in recognition of its best health and hygiene practices during the pandemic as the airport had gone to considerable lengths to ensure the safety of all its users.  The council praised the airport for implementing the suitable safety measures as part of its Covid-19 ‘For A Safer Journey’ programme and for the quality of cleanliness and disinfection of the airport terminal facilities. The airport was also awarded for following appropriate social distancing measures in line with government guidelines and for ensuring employees wore the adequate protection. Other efforts taken by the airport to protect staff and passengers include them continuing to offer free rapid Lateral Flow tests to all on-site employees and travellers to prevent the spread and transmission of the coronavirus.

Birmingham Airport said: “We hope that this accreditation goes some way to reassure customers that they will have a safe and stress free journey the next time they fly through Birmingham, and we look forward to welcoming customers, partners and colleagues back in the coming weeks.”

New Summer Destination Routes

Last month the airport also announced the launch of some new routes for summer 2021 working with EasyJet and EasyJet Holidays. From 29 June, the new flights and holidays will take off from Birmingham Airport to popular beach destinations such as Majorca, Málaga and Alicante in Spain, to Faro in Portugal, and Corfu in Greece, offering Midlands customers even more choices when it comes to booking a summer holiday. The airport also recently launched two new flights to the stunning Italian islands of Sicily and Sardinia, and added new low-cost flights to Turkey with Turkish Airline, AnadlouJet flying directly from Birmingham Airport,

Nick Barton, Chief Executive of Birmingham Airport, added: “These additional sunshine routes demonstrate the strong demand in the region for both business and leisure travel and the carrier’s commitment to serving the Midlands.”

Birmingham Airport is the UK’s third largest airport outside London, and the UK’s seventh largest overall.  The launch of new routes and the latest health accreditation certification are a step in the right direction for the airport’s recovery strategy. This will help its customers finally get away on a much-needed and long-awaited summer holiday.
