Bad Weather: Passengers Stuck at Heathrow Airport due to Flight Cancellation

Passengers travelling in and out of Heathrow airport have had their flights cancelled due to the unusual weather conditions experienced across London early Sunday morning, 11 December 2022. Temperatures have dropped to as low as -1C and have not gone above 0C in London today,

Several travellers took to social media to express their frustration at the poor weather conditions, resulting in their standing in endless queues (of up to five hours) and a series of flight cancellations.

Some Brits have also been stuck abroad due to the adverse weather situation in Heathrow.

Responding to the chaos at the airport caused by the bad weather, a Heathrow spokesperson had this to say:

“Poor weather conditions are forecast across the UK today, and we want to reassure passengers that our colleagues are working in close collaboration with our airline and air traffic control partners to get them safely away on their journeys as quickly as possible. We encourage passengers to check their flight status with their airline for the latest information.”

The MET Office had initially issued a Yellow Fog Warning

MET Fog warning

While the travellers may be frustrated at the turnout of things at Heathrow airport today, it didn’t come as a surprise to man as the Met Office had initially issued a yellow fog warning for fog and ice.

“Areas of freezing fog will come and go but could produce very impaired visibility (down to 50 or 100 metres in places) and slippery surfaces this morning. Although becoming less widespread and less thick by lunchtime, some places may be affected through much of the day.”  the weather warning alert stated.

The yellow warnings are also said to affect most of the country until at least Monday morning and could lead to flight cancellations and cause delays to bus and train services.

Several Airlines are Affected

Not less than 48 flights were cancelled this morning; some sources reported 50. Several airlines are affected as they issue statements to their passengers explaining the situation.

Irish flag carrier AerLingus issued a statement confirming the cancellation of a number of their flights at Heathrow Airport due to ‘freezing fog conditions”.
