AirAsia announces record-breaking sales

AirAsia saw almost half a million seats purchased across both short haul and long haul flights. The milestone has also been seen as a success for the tourism and travel industry after consistent disruptions and lockdowns throughout the past three years. The promotion period is set to end on the 25 September 2022 and interested customers are urged to book their seats quickly before they sell out.

The FREE* Seats sale means that the ticket only equates to the cost of airport taxes and applicable charges, meaning that customers can fly from just RM23, equivalent to almost 8 AUD. Longer haul flights are more expensive at RM500 each way, or 165 AUD, however is still an extremely affordable option compared to other airlines.

So far, popular short haul destinations have included Langkawi, Penang and Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia as well as Phuket, Krabi, and  Chiang Mai in Thailand, Bali in Indonesia and Cebu in the Philippines. The likes of Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok to South Korea, (Seoul), Australia (Melbourne, Sydney, Perth), New Zealand (Auckland), India (New Delhi), the Middle East (Jeddah) and Japan (Tokyo and Sapporo) have been popular for longer haul flights on AirAsia X and Thai AirAsia X.

AirAsia promotion helps airline’s gradual rise after pandemic

Karen Chan, Group Chief Commercial Officer of AirAsia understands the importance of this promotion to encourage the rebuilding of connections between travel destinations again.

“As we celebrate our return to the skies and the reopening of borders, it is incredibly uplifting to see such strong demand across ASEAN destinations as well as our recently restored Australian, Korean, Japanese and Middle Eastern routes. While we are not out of the woods yet and still in recovery mode, this 5 Million FREE* Seats sale is a strong testament that we are back and we want to thank all our loyal customers for continuing to support AirAsia then and now. We sold half a million seats in a mere 2 days, that’s almost 200 seats per minute!”

Tony Fernandes, Chief Executive Officer of Capital A is feeling uplifted to see such a positive reaction towards the sale after a strenuous three years of disruptions.

“21 years ago, AirAsia created the Big Sales. While everyone is focused on digital advertising, we went back to traditional media and bucked the trend of conventional advertising using digital media. I am thrilled that our support of traditional media that has always been there in AirAsia resulted in record breaking daily sales. It was emotional for me to see today’s achievement, having gone through almost three years of hellish times to see us surpass our pre-COVID record daily sales record of 230,000 in January 2020.”

AirAsia is quickly taking off again after there were fears during the pandemic that the airline may go under, with Malaysia AirAsia undergoing a debt restructure to avoid liquidation and Thai AirAsia X filing for bankruptcy protection. However, the airline shows positivity as it restarts routes and relaunches hubs, including the recent reopening of its Cebu hub.

The promotion can be accessed through the airasia Super App and website. The promotion only includes travel between 1 January 2023 and 28 October 2023. Customers are also being told to keep their eye out for a special announcement from the airline as part of their 21st birthday celebrations.
