Air Belgium launches flights to South Africa, celebrating history as they become the first airline in 20 years to offer a direct flight between both locations.

Exciting Times Ahead

On September 14th, Air Belgium’s first flights between Brussels, Belgium and Johannesburg and Capetown, South Africa took place. The airline has introduced a weekly schedule for travellers who are aiming to travel to either destination. Every Wednesday and Sunday, Air Belgium’s A330neo will now depart from Brussels at 7:45 and arrive in Capetown by 7:15 the next day. Those in South Africa that are planning to travel to Brussels will be able to now board a flight from Cape Town International airport, with a quick layover at either Johannesburg or Tambo every Monday and Thursday.

What will this mean for South Africa’s tourism?

The CEO of Air Belgium, Niky Terzakis, has shared that the airline plan to make travelling more enjoyable and hassle-free for their travellers, especially those engaging in international travel. Air Belgium’s launch has come at the perfect time and will most definitely be celebrated by its locals as this month also marks ‘tourism month’ in South Africa.

“It is an exciting and important chapter for Air Belgium, but we’re equally thrilled to introduce South Africans to a new airline and an alternative route and thereby direct access to the heart of Europe, we often talk about ‘Belgitude’, and our motto is ‘Fly Belgian Class’, which is all about bringing joy back to international travel.”

Air Belgium’s launch of flights to South Africa is a positive move for both countries as a result of the business history that the two countries share together. Currently, Belgium is South Africa’s 6th largest trading business partner and the Western Cape’s 7th largest European export market. As a result, Air Belgium’s latest route development to and from both destinations will gather interest and make the lives of business travellers easier.
