In June 2024, Icelandair celebrated a successful mission in carrying two million passengers in 2024 marking a remarkable 7% rise over the previous year. Although a minor decrease was noted compared to the year before, the airline’s actionable nature and focus on via passengers resulted in an astonishing 7% increase in year-to-date passenger figures. President and CEO Bogil Nils Bogason emphasized the company’s adaptive profile and agility in adopting practices that respond to market changes stating

“In June we transported a similar number of passengers as last year, but we see a decrease in demand to Iceland compared to last year. As before, we have leveraged the flexibility of our route network and put increased focus on via passengers, with half of our passengers traveling across the Atlantic with a short connection in Iceland.”

Icelandair’s astonishing performance lies in the fact that despite being a small airline company it can compete the North Atlantic market by exploiting Iceland’s geographical location and offering flights in more than 50 destinations linking Europe and North America.

Other Icelandic Airlines

In June 2024, PLAY, Iceland’s other low-cost airline company, indicated similarly a 7,5% increase in carrying passengers compared to the previous year. The airline noted a steady increase especially during the summer travel period when tourism peaks in the picturesque landscape of Iceland with the radiant natural habitat and wildlife that this Nordic country offers.

Hence, Icelandair’s success to surpass other airlines in the competitive airline market makes it a pioneer in a wide worldwide region of the air travel. So, what do you think? Is Icelandair worth the title of a leading airline in the North Atlantic region?
